Interfactory Logistics via Autonomous Mobile Robots

Our client had a need for automated transportation of spare parts between factory sites. Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) which are operating outside, needs to comply with the announcement regarding autonomous entities formulated by the Danish Transport Authority. We enabled compliant use of AMRs by ensuring full implementation of autonomous entities, including filing, testing, contract management and documentation. This is the first compliant set up in Denmark.

THE CHALLENGE

Switching Vendors Without Roadblocks

The client was operating an intralogistics service to deliver spare parts from a central warehouse to production buildings using AMRs. To comply with new regulation on outdoor AMRs, the company had to switch robots and file for approval from the Danish Transport Authority, which had never been done before.

Securing regulatory approval for autonomous vehicles is an extensive and complex process, requiring strict adherence to safety and operational guidelines. Additionally, transitioning users from the existing system to a new one introduced further challenges in terms of training and adoption.

OUR APPROACH

Strategic Project Management for a Seamless Rollout

Managing the project, we coordinated all stakeholder communication, assisted the client and the vendor in obtaining the necessary regulatory approvals from the Danish Transport Authority.

Beyond the regulatory aspects, we also led change management efforts. This involved training users, addressing concerns about the transition, and ensuring a smooth adaptation to the new solution.

THE RESULTS

Scalability and Compliance Achieved

By aligning everything – from documentation and infrastructure to legal agreements and user engagement – we successfully delivered the project on time without disrupting existing workflows. New AMRs are now delivering spare parts from warehouses to factories, in compliance with current regulations.

FAQ

  1. Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) are used in factory logistics to transport materials, spare parts, and goods between production sites or within warehouse environments. They improve efficiency by automating repetitive transport tasks while reducing human labor and minimizing operational errors.

  2. Ensuring compliance when deploying outdoor AMRs involves securing approvals from relevant authorities, such as the Danish Transport Authority in Denmark. This process includes filing documentation, safety testing, adhering to operational regulations, and managing legal agreements. Compliance ensures safe and lawful operation in public or semi-public spaces.

  3. The process includes submitting detailed documentation on robot specifications, safety protocols, and operational plans to the regulating body. It also involves on-site testing, contract management, and stakeholder communication to ensure that all legal and technical requirements are fully met before deployment.

  4. Benefits include improved transportation efficiency, scalability, reduced labor costs, enhanced safety, and compliance with modern regulatory standards. AMRs can operate autonomously across multiple factory sites, supporting lean manufacturing and smart factory initiatives.
